What is broadband fibre?
Broadband fibre is a cost-effective, high-speed internet service in which capacity is shared, or contended, with other users in the area. Speeds may vary during busy periods, but it is well suited to everyday business needs such as email, web browsing, cloud applications and video conferencing.
What is dedicated fibre?
Dedicated fibre provides an uncontended connection reserved for your business. It offers more consistent performance, committed bandwidth and stronger service levels than a shared broadband service. It is best suited to organisations that rely on mission-critical cloud applications, voice services, hosting, large data transfers or consistently high availability.
What does contention ratio mean?
A contention ratio indicates how many customers may share the available network capacity. 1:1 contention means the bandwidth is dedicated to your business. 10:1 contention means that up to ten customers may share the available capacity. A lower contention ratio generally provides more consistent performance during peak periods. The right option depends on your applications, user numbers, risk tolerance and budget.
Why do I have to wait for my fibre installation?
Every fibre installation is different. Before a service can be activated, the provider may need to complete a site survey, plan the route, obtain wayleave or municipal approval, carry out civil works and install the fibre and equipment. Timelines depend largely on whether suitable fibre infrastructure already reaches the premises. An installation on an existing route can be relatively quick; a new build may take longer because it relies on third-party approvals and construction work.
What is the difference between symmetrical and asymmetrical fibre?
A symmetrical service provides the same upload and download speed. For example, a 100/100 Mbps service provides up to 100 Mbps in both directions. It is a strong fit for cloud applications, video conferencing, large file transfers, backups and remote collaboration. An asymmetrical service provides a faster download speed than upload speed. For example, a 100/20 Mbps service provides up to 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload. It can suit businesses that mostly browse, stream and download content rather than upload large volumes of data.
